The top four teams in the league qualify for the round-robin format playoffs to decide the league champions.
Kenya Forest Service (KFS) men’s volleyball team head coach Wachira Gatuiria says that the team will look to turn their season around in upcoming legs if they are to stand a chance to feature in the four-team playoffs.
The tactician admits that the team was ill-prepared for the third leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s league played on the weekend but promises a better show in the fourth leg.
“The week leading to the third leg saw our training interrupted by the countrywide recruitment exercise that had most players held up so we did not prepare well.
We find ourselves in unfamiliar territory so the plan is to work on picking more points in the next leg.
Last season we were fighting for a playoff chance until the final leg and that put a lot of pressure on the team. We want to secure a place way earlier,” the tactician offered.
It was a weekend to forget for the forest rangers as they lost two of their three matches in straight sets to holders General Service Unit (GSU) in a 25-18, 25-18, 27-25 outcome before going down to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-21). Their only points came courtesy of a walkover to Vihiga team.
KFS who finished sixth on the log last season find themselves in eleventh position with seven points after seven matches, having picked only two wins and one more point from their 3-2 loss to Administration Police.
Meanwhile, KFS have acquired the services of four players. Middle blockers Lewis Ogutu and George Okole from Kenya Ports Authority, Enoch Barasa from Equity Bank and outside hitter Enoch Kiptum from GSU are set to join the side.
“They are part of our plans for next season. For now, they cannot be allowed to features for KFS as they are registered with their respective teams for the season but we brought them on board as part of our early preparations for next season. They are good players and we could not wait until the end of the season to recruit them,” the tactician said.
